Archival Heritage

Crafted in Stone / Recorded on Paper: Promoting the Architectural and Archival Heritage of the Small Italian Municipalities (13th-20th Centuries). Historical Research and Digital Enhancement

Isabellla BALESTRERI (docente coordinatore), Andrea LONGHI, Marco FOLIN, Maria Grazia D'AMELIO, Elena SVALDUZ

The research project investigates the relationship between built and documentary heritage, focusing on Italian municipalities. It will analyze the so-called ‘centri minori’ by considering paradigmatic geographies in the history of north-central Italy. The project will identify documents that help interpret, decode, and describe the heritage of built and common areas, and build a geo-referenced database. The project will also enable the digitization of a selection of neglected or endangered documents, and organize public discussions to strengthen the interdisciplinary character of the research. The final objective is to publish a volume and monographic essays in Open Access, and to create a website to share the results of the research with a wide audience.

DABC role

In addition to performing National Coordination functions, the Research Unit will be responsible for conducting researches in municipal historical archives in specific areas (Valtellina, Valchiavenna, Alta Val Seriana), identifying and cataloging documents. They will form the information base of a GIS system, useful for locating and spatially describing buildings and descriptive data. Methods and skills of historical research and cartographic and topographical study will be systematically brought together.
