Castelseprio 2015

Castelseprio 2015 – UNESCO site – Producing and communicating knowledge for enhancement and use through a multidisciplinary approach

Paolo GASPAROLI (docente coordinatore), Matteo SCALTRITTI, Anna Teresa RONCHI

Castelseprio/Torba, since 2011 part of the UNESCO network “Italia Langobardorum. Centres of power and worship (568-774 A.D.)”, is a site of exceptional value for Lombardy, both for its archaeological and monumental evidence and for its environmental context. The management and use of the site, however, are complex.
For this reason, the project promoted the development of innovative tools and technologies for the conservation, protection and enhancement of the UNESCO site and its context, aimed at implementing knowledge and ensuring the best conditions for use through promotion and communication actions, conservation interventions and the implementation of preventive maintenance plans and programmes for the cultural and environmental heritage.

DABC role

The project involved research teams from four Departments: DABC, DASTU (lead partner), DICA, Meccanica. The activities carried out by DABC included: inspection activities on the archaeological site; field verification of the needs of use; production of guidelines for the drafting of conservation plans and definition of intervention priorities; definition of guidelines to ensure better conditions for public use of the sites.
