HOME_Lab_Innovative Solutions for Student Residences promotes an innovative vision of university accommodation, the services and equipment connected to it, proposing itself, on the national and international scene, as a privileged scientific and operational interlocutor with respect to the issues of living in the university as a student.
The laboratory acts as a field of study and research that combines theoretical study with forms of practical experimentation, as a place for monitoring, analysis and comparison on the subject, offering consultancy and support services related to the design, planning and management of infrastructures for Students Housing and related structures to support all stakeholders in the sector.
HOME_Lab’s mission is to provide services in the context of the many activities related to the themes of university living and the urban services and equipment connected to it, with the aim of:

  1. Consolidate the presence of the ABC Department within the University by collaborating with the structures already present there and active on the subject of housing (Campus Life Sector and ATE);
  2. Consolidate the presence of the ABC Department on the national and international territory, collaborating with research institutions, local administrations, universities and all public and private stakeholders;
  3. Providing scientific support, training and support to operators in the sector, in the form of webinars, study seminars, refresher courses, workshops, etc…;
  4. Develop interdisciplinary activities and research in line with the Department’s Scientific Project;
  5. Support and disseminate the results of studies, analyzes and Departmental research on the subject of Student Housing and related support services;
  6. Intercept possible funding channels to support scientific research on the subject of university housing and the processes associated with it (internationalisation, mobility, etc…).

Services offered

HOME_Lab_Innovative Solution for Student Accommodation brings together many disciplinary skills of the Department in a clearly identifiable area within the University learning programme, characterizing itself as an operational unit with its own scientific and technical autonomy, open and inclusive, especially towards young researchers, PhD students and research fellows, as bearers of interests and expertise in the field.
In light of the above statement, HOME_Lab aims to offer the following services:

  • Scientifically support the University structures in the context of actions to support university residences on new and built structures;
  • Being an operational support in the definition of innovative structures in the context of the techno-typological definitions that characterize the specific form of living by off-site students (national and international);
  • Develop critical support activities for the definition of technical and economic feasibility studies in the context of Student Housing;
  • Promote innovative models of student residence management also through the implementation of IoT systems;
  • Collaborate at a regional and national level in the drafting of technical and performance regulations relating to quantitative and qualitative standards;
  • Support and promote national and international conferences on the subject of university residency;
  • Activate a permanent observatory on university housing;
  • Planning technical-scientific and experimental dissemination activities;
  • Collaborate with other observers and/or laboratories already active within the Department on similar topics.

HOME_Lab is also aimed at supporting and carrying out research and teaching activities through degree theses, doctoral theses, sector research, preparation of exhibitions, participation in national and international architecture competitions, etc…

Actually, HOME_Lab_Innovative Solution for Student Accommodation is backed by the following databases and archives:

  • Updated database archive referring to the national production of university residences, created with the contribution of Law n. 338/2000 in support of university residency;
  • Database referring to morpho-technological-typological solutions relating to international university residences built in the last ten years;
  • Documentary archive on residences and colleges in the city of Milan;
  • Database, reworked on MUR source, relating to the trend of flows of national and international university students in the field of university education and inter-university exchanges in Milan, in Italy and in Europe;;
  • Repertoire of master’s degree and doctoral theses on Student housing.
