NEST – Martin Corullon

Cultural heritage and landscape

History, science, technology, management and enhancement

Program

The program aims to expand and update research on the strategies and tools of the conservation and enhancement project of the built heritage. In this field, theories and practices remain in constant evolution because they are continually stimulated by the updating of the means and technical possibilities, of the regulatory systems and of the scientific debate. This condition keeps open the process of refining the relationship between conservative and transformative instances, which has been the subject of many reflections and attempts, but still remains a place of experimentation and new solutions. The new frontiers of research and practice in this field seem to concern in particular: the application of new technologies, especially digital, in the development of more effective methods for the survey, the preparation and the communication in historic sites; the use of new materials in interventions on the built heritage of historical-artistic value; the integration of innovative museographic strategies in the conservation and architectural project, to explore new possibilities for the enhancement of historical traces, both material and immaterial, in restoration and reuse interventions; the strengthening of the role of historical research as a tool of the architectural project and the exploration of new methods of collaboration; experimentation of new practices of conservation and enhancement of the “museographic heritage” with particular reference to the history of twentieth-century Italian architecture. The aim of the project is to investigate the ongoing developments of these themes (and other complementary ones) and the consequent impact on research and practice in the field, with the aim of updating the state of the art (which in this area must continue to be renewed), strengthening educational programs, and identifying new lines of action and study. These objectives will be developed through the analysis of the most recent and significant design experiments, through bibliographic and field investigations, surveys and interviews with particular attention to those that implement innovative directions and applications and represent strategic laboratories for the verification and development of new knowledge and skills. The project will involve the implementation of bibliographic and field investigations, surveys, analyses and interviews, which will be carried out through the coordinated work of an interdisciplinary group of researchers, and will involve the participation of PhD students and students (through workshops and thesis projects) and the collaboration of scholars and professionals who have gained significant experience in the conservation and enhancement of built heritage.
