Capacity assessment and monitoring of heritage masonry structures using topology survey, innovative analytical tools and IoT

Gabriele Milani (Principal Investigator)

Architectural heritage is a major component of cultural heritage in both Italy and India. Heritage masonry structures are generally robust against environmental factors and other causes of deterioration. However, after centuries, they may show signs of ageing that can lead to structural failure.

The project aims to propose a technology-based framework for the assessment, conservation, and adaptive reuse of heritage masonry structures, and to translate this conceptual framework into practice through pilot cases in India and Italy. The proposed framework will integrate: (i) high-definition surveying and BIM; (ii) inverse analysis; (iii) structural load testing and monitoring; and (iv) long-term IoT-based monitoring.

For the pilot case studies, to be jointly conducted in the field by the Italian and Indian teams, four masonry structures in each country have been selected.
