In a global context marked by uncertainty, complexity, and increasingly rapid transformations, developing anticipatory capacities becomes essential to understand and consciously address the challenges ahead. For this purpose, foresight represents a set of methods and tools capable of analysing possible futures, identifying the drivers of change already underway, recognising emerging signals, and strategically orienting present-day decisions.

On Wednesday, November 25, in the Aula Magna of the ABC Department, the results of the first foresight initiative promoted by the Department were presented. The work involved a group of young researchers in building five future scenarios for the built environment in 2040, with the aim of outlining new research trajectories capable of generating positive social impacts through an ethical, responsible, and interdisciplinary approach.

The meaning of the meeting can be captured in a quote by Nobel laureate Herbert Simon, as reiterated by our Director, Stefano Capolongo:
“Our goal is not to predict the future. We are part of the future: our task is not to foresee it, but to design it.”
A principle that perfectly summarizes the philosophy guiding the Department’s work in building future visions and developing strategies oriented toward the common good.

The special guest of the event was Olivier Woeffray, Europe Foresight Leader at Arup. Within the firm, Olivier supports teams and clients in developing long-term visions by identifying signals of change, analysing global trends, and outlining future operating contexts through rigorous foresight methodologies. His contribution aims to help organisations make more informed decisions, manage opportunities and risks, and define strategic investments grounded in robust future scenarios.
