Neri Raffaella

Raffaella Neri, architect and industrial designer, graduated from the Scuola Politecnica di Design in Milan (1981), graduated from the Faculty of Architecture at the Polytechnic University of Milan (1986), earned a PhD in Architectural Composition from the IUAV University of Venice (1993), and is a full professor of Architectural and Urban Composition at the Polytechnic University of Milan, ABC Department - Architecture, Construction Engineering and Built Environment. Since 2003, she has been a member of the PhD Committee in Composition at the IUAV University of Venice and, since 2022, of the PhD Program of National Interest PASAP_med: Mediterranean Archaeological, Historical, Architectural and Landscape Heritage: Integrated Systems of Knowledge, Design, Protection and Enhancement, based at the University of Bari.

Research

He conducts research on topics related to architectural theory, urban design, and the role of construction in design. He studies issues related to the redevelopment of suburbs, the redevelopment of abandoned areas, docks, and military heritage, compositional principles for new residential developments and the construction of collective spaces in the contemporary city, and archaeological site design. He has participated in and organized local and national research projects on these topics, funded by the Ministry of Education, University and Research (MIUR), the National Research Council (CNR), and the European Community. The results of these projects have been published in seminars and conferences, and have been incorporated into teaching activities, degree theses, and doctoral theses. He participates in national and international seminars and conferences.

For the Milan Triennale, he collaborated on the organization of the exhibition "The Center Elsewhere. Peripheries and New Centralities in the Metropolitan Area" (1994-95); for the National Research Council (CNR), he coordinated research on architectural theory in Italy (2000); For the Ministry of Education, University and Research (MIUR), she participated, among other recent projects, in the PRIN 2005, 2007, and 2009 research projects on the issue of residential settlements, the results of which have been published in books published by Skira and LetteraVentidue (2014), in articles, and in conference proceedings.

She received funding for the European research project "European cities serve as Green Urban Gate towards Leadership in sustainable Energy (EU_GUGLE) - Identity and quality of living spaces: sustainable redevelopment projects in degraded urban contexts in the city of Milan" – within the Seventh Framework Programme FP7-Energy-Smartcities-2012, with the Municipality of Milan and the Energy Department of the Polytechnic University of Milan. She is responsible for the agreement between the University and the Ministry of Defense - Geniodife – on the reuse and valorization of military heritage; she was responsible for the University research project "The Milanese barracks system: urban analysis, morphological analysis, and typological analysis of the buildings." Reuse hypothesis and functional repurposing program, as well as the national workshop related to the redevelopment of the former Military Hospital in Milan.

Participates in competitions, workshops, and project consultations.
