SHIFTIN
Towards Resilient, Sustainable, and Biodiversity-Friendly Transport Infrastructure
Maria Pina Limongelli (Principal Investigator)
SHIFTIN accelerates the transition towards climate-neutral, resilient and biodiversity-friendly transport infrastructure by 2050. Roads, railways and ports require large volumes of raw materials, generate emissions and pollution, fragment habitats and are increasingly exposed to floods, landslides and heatwaves. Despite the availability of mature solutions, their uptake remains slow because of the lack of shared standards, comparable performance evidence and suitable procurement specifications.
The project will combine circular low-carbon construction materials, nature-based solutions, advanced monitoring and digital decision support. Full-scale demonstrators will be implemented along four TEN-T corridors – Atlantic, Scandinavian-Mediterranean, Baltic-Adriatic and North Sea-Baltic – covering road, rail and port contexts.
A Digital Twin-based Integrated Decision Support Platform will transform performance data into transparent whole-life indicators for carbon, circularity, resilience, biodiversity and costs. SHIFTIN will also deliver guidance, procurement templates and model clauses to embed sustainability, resilience and biodiversity requirements in European transport infrastructure.
Contribution to SDG: 9, 11, 12, 13.
