The impact of global value chain on growth and inequalities. A regional approach.

The XXI century is characterized by a global economic integration and an increasing fragmentation of production. Trade liberalisation, new markets and ICT advances have changed the international trade to continuous transactions of humans, goods and services. Global value chains (GVCs) have become the backbone of the world economy. Little is known about the effects that advanced countries gain from GVCs, especially on different groups of workers, depending on their skills, gender, or region, and wage levels. Analysis in this area will thus aid in an understanding of the benefit distribution, especially at regional level. The variations in the capacity of regions to integrate into GVCs, inevitably risk creating winners and losers with direct effects on territorial cohesion. The project will adopt a European perspective. Special attention will be paid to EU-centred GVCs driven by MNEs. EU perspective allows to better understand the Italian position, highlighting existing competitive gaps that policymakers need to fill to ensure sustainable and inclusive growth.
