Rewarded Safety, Informed Safety

Not Just Helmets and Rules: SISPRE, the Project by Politecnico and Fondazione Fiera Brings Gamification to Construction Site Safety

A field trial to improve well-being on construction sites and build a new, nationally replicable approach to safety training.

A smart bracelet that “talks” to moving vehicles and surprise quizzes on-site to promote safety. This is the heart of SISPRE – Informed Safety, Rewarded Safety, the project born from the collaboration between Fondazione Fiera Milano and Politecnico di Milano, aimed at making temporary and mobile construction sites safer.

The trial began at the large demolition site of MiCo (Milano Congressi), chosen for its complexity and the high number of moving machines – a potential source of risk for workers. Each worker was equipped with a special sensor bracelet capable of signaling their presence to maneuvering vehicles, even in so-called “blind spots,” reducing the risk of accidents.

Alongside the technology, SISPRE introduces a new approach to safety training: no more just “classroom hours,” but a gamified incentive system based on weekly quizzes, informative materials shared via chat, and a reward system for virtuous behavior.

“With SISPRE, we aim to create a more active, engaged, and positive safety culture, where workers are the main drivers of change,” explains Professor Marco Trani from the ABC Department – Architecture, Built Environment and Construction Engineering – at Politecnico di Milano. “Training goes beyond regulations: it stimulates attention, dialogue, and daily awareness.”

Every month, Politecnico technicians visit the construction site and, without notice, administer practical quizzes to workers based on real images of critical situations. The results are turned into a monthly ranking, and the top three scorers receive a certificate, a letter of commendation, and a cash prize.

The project, also supported by General Smontaggi S.p.A., the contracting company, involves all workers on a voluntary basis, including subcontractors. It is managed independently by the ABC Department of Politecnico, which acts as a “third-party entity.”

The SISPRE project is a one-of-a-kind initiative in the Italian landscape and could become a replicable model for the entire construction sector, especially in light of the new 2025 State-Regions Agreement on mandatory training.
