Villa dei Quintili, Central archaeological area (Appia Antica Archaeological Park)

2022

Laser scanner and photogrammetric surveys, 3 D modelling and XR platform development for conservative intervention and valorisation.
The project is part of the agreement stipulated between the Polytechnic of Milan and the Appia Antica Archaeological Park for activities relating to archaeological assets included within the Appia Antica Archaeological Park to be included in the procedure called: “Conservative restoration interventions for the protection and valorisation of the archaeological heritage of Villa dei Quintili – Interventions compatible with the value of the monument”. The current state of conservation, fragility and complexity of the archaeological site of Villa dei Quintili required a specific study activity aimed at updating and integrating the cognitive framework currently available to the Appia Antica Archaeological Park to be managed with a Digital Twin aimed at supporting a multidisciplinary and multiplatform environment. The project involved the digitization of the complex in question with the aid of advanced methodologies and techniques integrated laser scanners, photogrammetric (terrestrial and areas), and is aimed at the Scan-to-3D-to-XR process, aimed at generating 2D/3D integrated by photogrammetry (orthophotos and photoplanes), and three-dimensional digital geometric models manageable at the architectural scale to support design, and models that can be used to support its usability in an XR environment.
