The Creators of Eternal Egypt

2022

Temporary exhibition, Basilica Palladiana, Vicenza, 22 December 2022 – 28 May 2023.
The exhibition brings together more than 180 objects, in addition to Egyptian finds, there are around twenty loans from the Louvre in Paris. On display are masterpieces of statuary, sarcophagi, papyrus, bas-reliefs, sculpted and painted steles, amphorae and amulets. Many treasures will be revealed at the exhibition, including the anthropoid sarcophagus of Khonsuirdis and the famous trousseau of Queen Nefertari, who returns to Italy, to Vicenza, after several years of touring abroad.

The exhibition constitutes the last stage of the three-year project “Great Exhibitions in the Basilica” and is in dialogue with the previous exhibition The Renaissance Factory. Creative processes, market and production in Vicenza: although distant in space and time, Vicenza and Deir al-Medina are more similar than one might expect. In sixteenth-century Vicenza as well as in Egypt 3300 years ago, man felt the need to resort to art, architecture and craftsmanship to shape and define the surrounding world. Hence the attention to the daily life of the inhabitants of Deir el-Medina, among scenes painted on the walls of the tombs, colorful steles and ostraka, luxury objects and even rare musical instruments.
After exploring aspects of the earthly world, you will cross the threshold of the second part of the exhibition, dedicated to the journey of the deceased into the afterlife, where you will have the opportunity to admire, among other things, a rich selection of objects from the funerary objects of Queen Nefertari and the mummy with sarcophagus of Tariri.
The visit experience will be enriched by a series of multimedia installations, such as the one that closes the visit itinerary by narrating the story of the burial of the scribe Butehamon, revealing his numerous secrets.
