The Arch of Peace of Milan and its historical memory – the Scan-to-BIM-to-XR process

2019

The digital age has taken on an increasingly important role in the world of restoration, improving the management of built heritage and the diffusion of its tangible and intangible values. According to recent methods developed in the fields of 3 D survey and Building Information Modeling for Historic Buildings (HBIM), this research proposes a digital workflow capable of supporting the digital management of one of the most important Italian monuments in Northern Italy: the Arch of Peace in Milan. Digital photogrammetry, surveying, drawing and 3D modeling have been oriented towards the development of an immersive virtual environment (mixed reality) capable of interacting and telling the historical memory of a complex scenario to different types of users, from professionals to virtual tourists and students The Scan-to-BIM-to-XR project involved a series of activities in collaboration with the Milan superintendency - geometric, photogrammetric and laser scanning survey of the monument, production of 2 D as-found papers (plans, elevations and sections), 2 D mapping. Investigations, surveys, HBIM and VR/AR are functional to the drafting of support for the interactive project reality’ extending the use of tangible and intangible values for different types of users (experts and virtual tourists) and devices (mobile (VR headset, AR, Desktop)
