Pizzi Deneri Volcanological Observatory redevelopment project

2023-2026

As part of the MEET (Monitoring Earth's Evolution and Tectonics) Project, the VELUXlab team actively collaborates in the redevelopment of the Pizzi Deneri Volcanological Observatory, a unique laboratory in the world located just 2 km from the summit craters of Etna, in an ideal position for volcano monitoring. Built at an altitude of 2818 m above sea level with the Binishell technique designed by Dante Bini, the building consists of two self-supporting domes. The activity of the VELUXlab team focuses on actively supporting the design of the redevelopment intervention, both from an architectural and technological point of view. In addition to overall design strategies, the team is concerned with the design and verification of state-of-the-art technological solutions for the envelope, focused on using lightweight and highly energy-efficient dry laminated systems.
