Stefano Della Torre


ICAR/19 - Conservation and restoration of architecture

Born at Cernobbio (Como, Italy) the 8.8.1955, he graduated at Politecnico di Milano, in Civil Engineering, Structural section, in 1980, and in Architecture in 1986.

President of Building Smart Italy, the Italian Chapter of Building Smart IAI – International Alliance for Interoperability.

He has been assistant professor of Restoration at Politecnico di Milano in 1984, then in 1992 associate professor of Restoration, at first at the University of Brescia, and since 1998 at Politecnico di Milano, Faculty of Architecture, where he became full professor in March 2001.

In the years … he taught in the Accademia di Architettura di Mendrisio (Switzerland).

Between 1995 and 2002 he taught at the Post-Graduate School of Restoration of the Monuments at Politecnico di Milano.

In the years 2009-2015 he teaches Preventive Conservation of Cultural Heritage in the Post Graduate School for Cultural Heritage in the University of Macerata.

Since 2015 he teaches in the post-graduate program in Economics and Techniques for the Conservation of the Architectural and Environmental Heritage of University of Nova Gorica (Slovenia).

He cooperates on PhD-related research activities with RLICC at Leuven Katholieke Universiteit (Belgium).

Chosen by ANVUR as a member of GEV 08 for VQR 2004-2010, representing SSD ICAR/19 (Restoration).

Principal Investigator of PRIN (Research Project of National Interest)  “Knowledge of historical building techniques: protocols and innovative tools for diffusion and applicability to preservation process” (2005/2006; total budget € 234.000,00).

Principal Investigator of PRIN “Built Heritage Information Modeling/Management” (February 2011/January 2016; total budget € 970.000,00).

Project Leader of project “CHANGES – Changes in cultural Heritage Activities: New Goals and benefits for Economy and Society”, awarded 2015 on the Joint Call JPI-HERITAGE Plus (total budget € 852.284,00).

Leader of Research Unit in the projects:

– PRIN 2001: Il sistema informativo a supporto delle strategie innovative di conservazione del patrimonio storico-architettonico (Principal Investigator: Prof. Sergio Croce);
– Coordinator for Politecnico di Milano in the National project SIDART (Sistema Integrato per la Diagnostica dei beni ARTistici) 2003-2006;
 – “L’arte dello stucco nel Parco dei Magistri Comacini (Intelvesi, Campionesi e Ticinesi) delle Valli e dei Laghi: valorizzazione, conservazione e promozione”, Interreg IIIA Italia-Svizzera (2004-2006);
– “Cultura Alpina”, in the frame of Progetto Integrato Transfrontaliero “Sapalp. Saperi Alpini: Percorsi di sostenibilità lungo lo spartiacque comasco ticinese”, Interreg IIIA Italia-Svizzera (2010-2014);
– “Conservazione Programmata nello spazio comune Retico”, Interreg IIIA Italia-Svizzera (2013-2015), with a focus on BIM procedures for historic buildings;
– “I Cammini della Regina”, Interreg IIIA Italia-Svizzera (2013-2015).

Scientific leader of the project Monument Watch Italy, funded by Regione Lombardia (2010-2013; total budget € 510.000,00).

He designed a set of wide area projects centered on interventions on built cultural heritage end environment, especially in the Como Lake district.

He has been the coordinator of a set of researches promoted by Regione Lombardia about preventive conservation and planned maintenance of Built Cultural Heritage.

Consultant of Cariplo Foundation for the project “Cultural districts” (2006/2012).

Associate Partner of project SPRECOMAH (Seminars on Preventive Conservation and Monitoring of Architectural Heritage) financed by UE on 6° FP. Member of network PRECOMOS at the Unesco Chair on Preventive Conservation of Cultural Heritage based at KU Leuven (B) in cooperation with Monumentenwacht Flanders and the University of Cuenca (Ecuador).

He was responsible for conservation works, or anyway involved in conservation activities on important monuments.

He is the author of more than 300 publications.
