Massimo Ferrari


ICAR/14 - Architectural and urban design

Massimo Ferrari (Piacenza, 1965) is an architect and associate professor in Architectural and Urban Composition in the Politecnico di Milano, since 2010 he is editor of the Architecture journal «Casabella», since 2014 he has participated in the Lecturers’ Board of Doctorate Degree in Architecture Built Environment and Construction Engineering _ ABC PhD and since 2012 in the Scientific Committee of the Architecture Manuals collection by MUP Editore (Parma). He has organised publications on architecture and art and his research focusses mainly on architectural design and the relationship between shape and structure. 

In 2011 he participated in the PRIN 2011 funded research (national coordinator Prof Gino Malacarne) on the theme “Luoghi della residenza. Criteri per il progetto e lo sviluppo delle aree e degli edifici residenziali” and on the biennial research funded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs “Il Territorio Adriatico – Orizzonte storico, geografia del paesaggio, aspetti economici giuridici e artistici”, Adriatic Coordination (national coordinator Prof Giuseppe De Vergottin). 

He has organised a number of exhibitions including the recent: “Quattro Chiese italiane” (2011) at CASABELLA Laboratorio (Milan), “Antonio Monestiroli. Architettura Razionale” (2012) at the Casa del Mantegna (Mantua), “Per un’idea di Museo” (2014) at the Urban Center of Parma, “Di ogni Ordine e Grado. L’architettura della Scuola (2015) in Como for Triennale Xtra; he has collaborated in directing “L’architettura del mondo” (2012), “Senza Pericolo” (2013) “Africa Big Change Big Chance” (2014) at the Triennial of Milan. Speaker in national and international conventions, as a designer, in 2006 he was invited (with Tomaso Monestiroli) to the X Biennial of Architecture in Venice for a theatre project in VEMA, in 1997 he won first prize for the Renovations of Palazzo Tentorio and the realisation of the new council premises in Canzo, Como (constructed in 2003), in 2008 he won first prize in the competition for the “Riqualificazione del lungomare di Siracusa” (in collaboration), in 2009 he was awarded first prize in the competition for the redevelopment of Piazza Santa Croce in Parma. In 2014 he designed the Cluster Fruits and Legumes Pavilion for Milano Expo 2015.
